Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting and Finance (Part-Time)

The most valuable employees are those who have not only a sound knowledge and understanding of various parts of a business but those who are quick learners and team players with leadership potential. The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting and Finance programme allows you to explore related areas in management and leadership where you can differentiate yourself from the competition and prove to employers that you can make an immediate and positive contribution to their organisations.
This programme is conducted in partnership with the Newcastle Business School (NBS), which is a part of Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. The delivery is the same as in UK; with identical course content, contact hours and examination procedures.

Programme Objective
This degree provides students with a strong foundation in general business management. The overall aim is to provide students with the necessary business skills and knowledge to take on responsible management positions early in their careers. It also has a strong vocational emphasis. Enormously relevant to the needs of modern business, it combines management theory with 'hands on' practical application and opportunities to demonstrate proficiency in fields like analysis, synthesis and decision-making.
Programme Structure & Curriculum
1. Strategic Management and Leadership (SM0374)
The aim of the module is to integrate learning that has taken place in previous years about the organisation and its environment and to encourage students to think strategically about the future development of organisations. The module will also show how leadership at all levels is important throughout this process and offer the opportunity for students to develop their own leadership, intellectual and creative skills.
2. Ethics and Governance (FN0360)
The module examines issues relating to business ethics and corporate governance. Business ethics involves the examination of relationship between the organisations, those involved in the management of organisations and external stakeholders. Alternative perspectives will be critically examined to provide intellectual frameworks and vocabulary to enable the student to identify their own reactions to the subject and debate their positions with peers.
Corporate governance is concerned with the structures created by government and other regulatory bodies around the world to address some of the issues raised by an investigation of business ethics. In particular, the function and role of the board will be examined together with the type of relationships posited with shareholders and others with a stake in the organisation.
3. Professional Project (NX0315)
The module provides an opportunity to explore the key study competences required to achieve academic success and develop these into employment competences to promote career success. These competences will be developed and practised and applied to an investigation of a business issue/problem. To support this individual investigation into an applied business problem or issue the student will be given a defined topic to research and relevant information relating to the topic. The information will be set in the context of an appropriate academic framework and the student will be expected to draw relevant conclusions, write up and submit the work in an approved format, target length 8 to 10,000 words.
4. Contemporary Corporate Reporting (FN0361)
The aim of this module is to equip students with the ability to comprehensively understand corporate reports. As end users of published financial statements, students must be able to critically evaluate the quality of the information given in these reports.
5. International Finance and Financial Management (FN0363)
Financial management for international companies involves not only examining the fundamentals of investment choice, capital structure, and dividend decisions, but also the continuously changing international environment. This module is designed to allow the student to show an appreciation of some of the most pressing contemporary financial issues facing companies today in the international environment as well as to be able to apply the impact of these to the creation of wealth and value by managers.
6. Strategic Management Accounting (FN0364)
Strategic management accounting was to evolve as a form of management accounting in which emphasis is placed on information which relates to factors external to the firm, as well as non-financial information and internally generated information. The concept has also broadened into areas of strategic control and change with impacts and implications practices of costing, management control systems, budgeting and integrated performance management systems, which are to be explored in this module.

* Pathway modules
These programmes involve lectures, group discussions, case studies and presentations by students. Weekly lectures are conducted by qualified and experienced local lecturers approved by Northumbria University. Classes are usually held two to three times weekly from 7.00pm to 10.00pm on weekdays or 2.00pm to 5.00pm on Saturdays with a total of up to 36 contact hours per module.
Examinations & Assessment
Assessment is either by coursework and/or written examination, depending on the requirements of each module. Students must fulfil the minimum attendance requirement of at least 75% (for part-time) for each module before they are allowed to submit their coursework for assessment or considered eligible to take the prescribed examination.
The decision to grant students, should they fail a module, a rework of coursework or a supplementary examination is at the sole discretion of the university's examination boards. However, a marking/supplementary examination fee per module is applicable.
A student must complete the programme within five years of registration, starting from the commencement of the first semester. Assessment will be in accordance with the academic regulations of Northumbria University as set out in the Assessment Regulations for Northumbria Awards (ARNA). The Module Examination Board and the Progression and Awards Board will determine the appropriateness of assessment, student progression and classification.
Award of Certificate
Students who have completed all necessary course works, successfully passed all required modules and met all financial obligations to the institute and Northumbria University shall be awarded the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting and Finance by Northumbria University and be allowed to use the designatory letters “BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance” respectively after their names.
Entry Requirements
The institute's Board of Studies will assess all qualifications and admit students into the final year of the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance programme.
- Polytechnic Diploma in Accounting and Finance
- Other related Diploma PLUS Advanced and/or Higher Diploma in accounting and finance are considered on a case-by-case basis

A non-refundable application processing fee of S$214.00 (incl. 7% GST) is chargeable upon application and submission of documents.
The course fees cover course materials and tuition by local tutors and DOES NOT include textbooks and other miscellaneous charges, if any.
MIS Membership
The Marketing Institute of Singapore is a professional body for sales and marketing practitioners. All successful applicants must be individual members of the Institute.

Changes & Amendments
The Marketing Institute of Singapore Training Centre reserves the right to vary, change and amend the module content, entry requirements, course fees, curriculum, examination rules and regulations, lecturers, lecture date, venue and other aspects of the course at any time prior to and during the delivery of the modules.
Application Procedures
An applicant must complete the application form and return it together with the following documents:
- CERTIFIED TRUE COPIES of educational certificates and transcripts may be made by your company or at the Marketing Institute of Singapore Training Centre, in which case, the originals must be presented for verification.
- Two passport-sized photographs.
- Payment of S$214.00 (incl. 7% GST) for part-time studies as the application processing fee (non-refundable). Please make cheque payable to “MIS Training Centre”.
